Students will discuss and list animals with the teacher on the board. Students draw an animal section (head, body, or feet/tail). Students then combine their final drawings to create a new creature with their classmates. Students talk about their animal choices and their final creatures.
Students design digital posters about one marine animal that is at risk from human activities in its ocean environment. Students form groups to look up information on animals at risk and various marine environments and human activities.
Through map design, students learn about their community. Students learn about symbolism in their community and what important landmarks represent their neighborhoods. Students make lists of different places in their neighborhood and choose 5 places to generate ideas for their symbols.
Students use the symbols they created in the previous lesson to create their neighborhood maps. Students learn the value of community through symbolic representation. Students learn why maps are important and how they can be used in their everyday life.
Students add to the maps they created in the previous lesson. They choose their favorite place on the map to zoom in on and draw it under a magnifying class. Students learn about how communities and places within communities are connected. Through this they learn more about the location.
